Everyday, we rely on retrieving information from memory to go about doing certain tasks -- whether it's remembering your grocery list or being able to operate your espresso machine. When we found that there may be ways to access more information than ones we can consciously recall, it got us thinking. How much information do we carry around buried below the level of consciousness, and how can we access them? Finding the answers to these questions can potentially change how we perceive our own knowledge capacity, and even help create alternative research methods for examining memory deterioration related to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. We want to know how much we know (or can know) without consciously knowing, and we're hoping that you do too.
Why are you doing crowd-funding?
The reason for us to go with crowd-funding is twofold: traditional funding methods for this research topic are inefficient, and we want to go beyond simply raising money for ourselves.
Funding through government and other funding agencies require a lengthy approval and application process; it can take months to finalize all application documents, and subsequently even more time for the funds to be released and processed. Given the controversial topic of our research (Ouija boards and science? Ludicrous!), it also adds to the difficulty of acquiring grants through conventional means. Crowd-funding helps us find like-minded individuals who are as passionate as we are when it comes to exploring the unconscious, and even better -- it helps us find them quickly!
But it's more than that. We want to get you involved because we believe that scientific research should be collaborative and easily accessible. By putting our project in the public eye, we want to encourage more people to take part in science, and to put the power in their hands when it comes to deciding what research should be funded, and how that research can be better done. We want to give everyone a chance to learn more about the unconscious, how research is done, and how crowd-funding can improve the existing ways of doing science.
How does this crowd-funding campaign work?
Our crowd-funding campaign follows an all-or-nothing, Kickstarter-type design. If we fail to reach our pledged goal before the campaign deadline, all of your contributions will be returned to you, and we do not receive any funds at all. In the case that we reach our first goal, we will be able to continue our campaign to meet our stretch goal.
What is the minimum amount for contributions?
There is absolutely no minimum when it comes to supporting our campaign. Talk about us, share our project details with the people you know, and if you would like to be a part of us, join our team as a supporter, an associate, or a backer.
What do I get for contributing?
As a team member, you will:
Receive affectionate acknowledgements in various forms (tweets, status updates, blog shoutouts, list of contributors in our publication) to honour your generosity
Have the chance to view the latest updates on our research through our website
Be able to give suggestions or have your questions answered regarding our project -- you're a part of the team!
Receive a beautifully-bounded research report containing our findings and results
And most important of all, acquire the glorious satisfaction of contributing to science
